About Stunf

Hi there!

We are Stunf, a small software company (also known as a mISV or bootstrapped startup) from the Netherlands.

We are passionate about making intuitive, simple, and friendly apps for small businesses, teams and individuals. Our mission is to make people forget about awfully complex software they have to use at work.

Through these apps we want to make people more productive, organized and – if we can – even more happy! We have a strong focus on clear, uncluttered design, and using the most recent web developments. We keep our apps small, quick to learn, easy to use. One app, one solved problem. As we want to solve many common problems teams and small businesses share, we plan on releasing various simple apps that work really well together. This way you only use the app(s) for the problems or single problem you need solved, each app being simple to use. By hosting the apps ourselves, we want to take the burden of software installation and maintenance from the businesses whose core activities do not include setting up their own IT department.

The following 11 points summarize our vision:

1. We solve problems, one at a time. Ever had to work with a program with a user interface resembling an airplane cockpit, containing hundreds of buttons and options? We believe in keeping our applications as simple as possible, solving a single problem at the time.

2. We bring the web and small businesses together. Why should businesses miss out on all the fun? Recent web developments such as feeds and beautiful designs are also useful for businesses and teams. Life’s too short to work with software that isn’t any good.

3. Happy people are productive people. “Work” won’t be your definition of fun, but we want to take up the challenge and try to make working with our applications more fun.

4. Nothing to install. Not feeling like setting up your IT department? Our applications live on the internet and can be accessed from any place, any time.

5. We listen and improve. If you have any feedback, we’re always happy to hear about it. Only by listening can we really find out where we need to improve.

6. We love customer feedback, technology, design & the web. We are passionate about what we do, and we hope this shows in our products!

7. Simple and Clean. What a program doesn’t do is almost as important as what it does do. Hide features that are rarely used, leave out features that are unimportant. This makes the product easier to work with and keeps the interface clean.

8. Be a friendly neighbor. Work together and integrate with other software. Don’t try to solve everything by yourself. We won’t keep your data hostage.

9. Web and Desktop. We try to combine the best of both worlds. For collaboration and easy access a Web app makes sense. But a web application sometimes lacks the power that the desktop offers. That’s why our applications will exist on both planes.

10. Business Model. All our products are based on a Freemium model. This means we will always offer customers a (limited) free version, as well as paid versions for the extra functionality they like. We believe in the pay-as-you-go, cancel-at-any-time model.

11. Plug and play. Choose what you need, leave out the rest. We don’t like applications that are too big: you pay for features you don’t need, are hard to adopt (steep learning curve), and you have to change your company’s processes to match the application’s! With our ‘one app for one problem’ approach we want to offer a wide range of apps which can all be used stand-alone or work together. Need more or less apps? Just remove or add them. Pay for what you need, and keep the user interfaces clean and simple.

Products

Project management and task planning for people who hate project management and task planning.

Thymer is our first product and is currently in private beta (and as such currently free to use). Check out the splash page! After the beta, Thymer will be released as a subscription-based web service. We are still working out a pricing plan for personal accounts to large teams. A free version will also remain available.

More products are in active development. As soon as we’re ready to announce more, you’ll read about it on our blog!

History

Stunf was founded by three graduate students in the summer of 2007. We spent over a year writing a (Dutch) desktop product and finally released it in 2008. Despite having a handful of customers, in the end we discovered the accessible market was much too small and that our business model was entirely unrealistic. We have no regrets, we learned many valuable lessons and we’re more determined than ever to make our next ideas work.

About us

Meet the founders:

Wim Cools
Having written his own operating system, Wim has a strong background in low level software and device drivers. So naturally, Wim ended up designing most of the user interfaces.

Diederik van Houten
Diederik (jd) likes to write compilers and interpreters for programming languages. Facing the problems that all web developers face today he can only barely resist the temptation to write a new language for web development.

The team is powered by griotten. Unhealthily so.
